Copyright Protection Oman

(Copyright law issued by Royal Decree No. 65/2008 2008 dated 4/5/2008 and came into effect after its publication in the Official Gazette No. 863 issued on 18/5/2008.

The created works of literature, arts and science shall enjoy protection under this law regardless of their value, type, and way of expression or purpose of their production.

Protection shall not cover mere ideas, procedures, working methods, mathematical concepts, principles, discoveries and data.

The term of economic copyrights protection, mandated under this law, is the life of the author and seventy years commencing from the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year, following the year of the author’s death.

Whereas, the economic rights of authors of joint works shall be protected for their life and seventy years starting from the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year following the year of the death of the last surviving author. Copyright works submit in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and shall be considered a presumption of ownership.

The Sultanate of Oman is a member of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works and Copyright.

  • A Power of Attorney notarized and legalized by the Consulate of Oman. If there is no Omani Consulate in your country, the power of attorney may be legalized by the Consulate of any Arab country.
  • A certified copy of home or any foreign registration of the copyright (with an Arabic translation).
  • Three copies of the work.
